Most are familiar with the statement by Christ Jesus that faith as large as a mustard seed can move mountains and accomplish other previously impossible tasks. The Parable of the Mustard Seed as well as the subsequent Parable of the Leaven are more intimate. Rather than focusing on what an individual can do when they love God, these two parables focus on a disciple’s lasting impact on the community around them.

Verse by verse analysis of the Parable of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven (Matthew 13:31–33):

13:31 — By comparing the kingdom of heaven to the smallest of all seeds, Christ highlights a couple of issues. First, the power of heaven compared to the world is disproportionate to expectations. A tiny portion of heaven has a significant impact. Second, by remaining focused on God’s love “heaven”, no matter how small it may feel to a disciple, still has potential to grow.

13:32 — The mustard seed grows from the smallest of seeds to a tree in the garden that supports additional life, such as birds.

13:33 — When making leavened bread (bread that rises), it is possible to divide a small portion of the yeast to grow within multiple loaves. By proper care, a little yeast helps to create a feast for many.
