Part Ten of The Narrow Gate

The Narrow Gate is an allegory in twelve parts. This is part ten.

After a short walk up the stream, Gregory and Gordito came upon an oversized staircase that was covered with mosses and small plants. It clearly had not been used for many years. As they climbed, Gordito pointed at the pile of boulders that formed the hill beneath the steps.

“That’s the dam.”

To Gregory the dam looked more like a mountain than anything man made, or even Big Foot made. Gregory let out a low whistle.

“Who makes a dam that looks like a mountain?”

“Big Foot.”

“Right.”

It took the rest of the day for man and mouse to reach the top of the staircase. Where they camped for the night. Gregory created a screen to hide them from anyone who might travel on the path they followed.

Firefly AI

In the pitch black of night, a short parade of Big Foot beings marched past them. The monsters carried a dead peer whom they had wrapped in a muslin style cloth. The fabric was weaved from plants. Gregory could see the crude waft and woof with a rough surface. The beings were covered in fur, so it was not necessary to have fine cloth.

The creatures sang a dirge as they passed by Gregory and Gordito. The sorrowful mourning song came from their guts…
