Revelation 9

The dark night of the soul, as attested to by documented saints, is a period of trials caused by the disappearance of a direct connection with Christ. In this period Jesus appears to discontinue a formerly interactive conversation. In this chapter, John enters that period. Christ appears to be absent to him.
